Overview

How anti-wrinkle treatment works.

Botulinum toxin is a purified protein that temporarily reduces the activity of the specific muscles that create expression lines. When those muscles move less, the overlying skin creases less, so dynamic lines — the ones that appear when you frown, raise your brows or smile — soften over the following one to two weeks.

Botulinum toxin is a prescription-only medicine. It is prescribed for you individually by a clinician after assessment; it is not an off-the-shelf product and we do not advertise it by brand name.

Suitability

Who it may suit.

It can suit adults bothered by dynamic expression lines who want a natural softening rather than a frozen look. Common areas are:

  • Forehead lines
  • Frown lines between the brows (glabella)
  • Crow’s feet around the eyes

It is also used for excessive underarm sweating (hyperhidrosis). It is not suitable in pregnancy or breastfeeding, with certain neuromuscular conditions, or where expectations are unrealistic.

Consultation

Assessment first.

You are assessed in person by a clinician who looks at your muscle movement and facial balance, confirms the treatment is appropriate and safe for you, and agrees a conservative plan. We assess and treat in person; we do not arrange remote treatment.

What treatment involves

On the day.

A series of tiny injections is placed into the target muscles using a very fine needle. It takes only a few minutes and most people describe it as a quick pinch. There is no significant downtime — you can usually return to normal activities, following a few simple aftercare points.

Outcomes & limits

What to expect.

Softening develops over about 10–14 days and typically lasts 3–4 months, after which muscle activity gradually returns and treatment can be repeated. It relaxes dynamic lines; it does not add volume (that is dermal filler) or change skin texture (that is skin rejuvenation). Deep static lines etched into the skin may soften but not disappear. Results vary between individuals and are not guaranteed.

Excessive sweating

Hyperhidrosis, too.

Botulinum toxin treatment is also used for troublesome excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), most commonly of the underarms, where antiperspirants and other measures have not helped. It works by reducing the nerve signal to overactive sweat glands, with effects that usually last several months before repeating. Suitability is assessed the same way — in person, with your history reviewed — and the treatment is prescribed individually.

Safety

Side effects and precautions.

Common, temporary effects include small bruises, redness or mild tenderness at injection points and occasionally a short-lived headache. Less commonly, the effect can spread slightly to nearby muscles and cause temporary asymmetry or a heavy brow or eyelid; these resolve as the treatment wears off and can often be improved at review.

Contraindications and precautions include pregnancy and breastfeeding, known neuromuscular disorders, infection at the treatment site, and certain medicines — all covered at your assessment. Tell us your full medical history and medication list.

Is this Botox?

“Botox” is a brand name for a botulinum toxin product. Botulinum toxin is a prescription-only medicine, so under UK rules we describe the treatment generically as anti-wrinkle or botulinum toxin treatment rather than advertising a brand. The treatment is prescribed and administered by our clinicians after assessment.

When will I see results, and how long do they last?

Movement softens gradually over about 10–14 days, and the effect typically lasts around 3–4 months before muscle activity returns. Duration varies between individuals and with the areas treated.

Will my face look frozen?

Not with conservative dosing. The aim is to soften lines while keeping natural expression. We would rather you return for a small top-up than over-treat.

What if it looks uneven?

Minor asymmetry can occur as the effect settles and is usually easily corrected at a review appointment, which is why we see you again after your first treatment.

Can I have it if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?

No. Botulinum toxin treatment is not given during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Tell us about this and about any neuromuscular conditions or relevant medicines at assessment.
