Educational information — not a substitute for clinical assessment

This page explains CT in general terms. Because CT uses X-rays, whether it is the right scan for you is carefully considered at consultation.

About the scan

What a CT scan is

A computed tomography (CT) scan uses X-rays and a computer to build detailed cross-sectional images of the body. It is fast and excellent for imaging the chest, abdomen, lungs, blood vessels and bony structures, and for urgent questions where speed matters.

We arrange CT through trusted CQC-registered partner centres, including Vista Health, Oryon Imaging and Alliance Medical, with the report brought back to a clinician here.

When it may help

Common uses

Your clinician may suggest this scan to help investigate symptoms like these — the right test is always chosen at consultation.

  • Chest, lungs and abdomen
  • Kidney stones and abdominal pain
  • Blood vessels (CT angiography)
  • Complex fractures and bony detail
  • Cancer staging and follow-up, where indicated

What to expect

What to expect

  1. Before your scan

Some scans use a contrast injection or drink to highlight certain areas.

You can usually go home straight after.

  2. During your scan

A CT scan is quick — often just a few minutes.

You lie on a table that passes through a ring-shaped scanner.

A note on radiation

CT does use X-ray radiation, so scans are only recommended when the benefit clearly outweighs the small associated risk. Your clinician will make sure a CT is the most appropriate test before arranging it.

Turnaround: CT appointments are often available within days, with the specialist report typically returned within a few working days — expedited where clinically urgent.

Your results

Your images are reported by a consultant radiologist, and a clinician here explains the findings and agrees next steps with you.

Price & booking

Booking your CT scan

Partner imaging prices depend on the scan and the centre, so we confirm the cost with you before anything is booked. A doctor assessment here is £140 on our price list.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Still have a question? Our team can help you choose the right appointment.

Does a CT scan use radiation?

Yes, CT uses X-ray radiation, so it is recommended only when the benefit clearly outweighs the small risk. Your clinician will confirm it is the right test.

How long does a CT take?

The scan itself is very quick, often just a few minutes, though preparation with contrast can add time.

Where is my CT done?

Through a trusted CQC-registered partner centre such as Vista Health, Oryon Imaging or Alliance Medical, with results brought back here.

Do I need a referral?

A clinician referral is usually required. Contact us if you are unsure what you need.

Will I need a contrast injection?

Some CT scans use a contrast dye to highlight blood vessels or organs. You will be told in advance if this applies.

Can I book an MRI, CT or X-ray without seeing a doctor?

These scans generally need an appropriate clinical referral. Book a consultation with us and, where clinically appropriate, we request the scan, coordinate it with a partner centre and review the result with you.

How much does it cost?

Partner imaging prices depend on the scan and the centre. Please contact us for current pricing — we confirm the cost before anything goes ahead.

Can I use private medical insurance?

Often, yes — we have direct agreements with Bupa, AXA Health, Vitality, Aviva and Cigna. Coverage depends on your policy and authorisation, and some insurers need a GP referral first. See insurance partners.
