Why screen

Silent, but preventable

Glaucoma damages the optic nerve, usually from raised pressure in the eye, and lost vision can’t be recovered — but early detection and treatment can stop it progressing. Risk rises with age, family history, short-sightedness and certain ethnic backgrounds.

What we check

The three key markers

Screening looks at eye pressure (tonometry), the optic nerve (OCT imaging) and your peripheral vision (visual fields). Together these give a clear picture of your risk. It’s all quick and comfortable.

This is an assess, scan and refer service. Where treatment or specialist management is needed, we arrange it promptly through our trusted consultant and imaging partners.

If we find a concern

Straight to the right specialist

If your results suggest glaucoma or a high risk, we explain it clearly and refer you promptly to a consultant ophthalmologist for confirmation and treatment (usually simple eye drops). Early action protects your sight.

Safe, joined-up care

You’re seen by GMC-registered clinicians at our CQC-registered Whitechapel clinic. We keep clear, confidential records and, with your consent, share a summary with your NHS GP so your care stays joined up. A chaperone is available for any examination on request, at no charge.

You don’t need to be registered with us, and private care complements — it doesn’t replace — being registered with an NHS GP.

What we don’t do here

  • We are not an emergency service. For anything serious or life-threatening, call 999 or go to A&E. For urgent advice any time, NHS 111 is available 24/7.
  • We are an outpatient clinic and do not provide hospital admission or inpatient care.
  • Private care and screening complement, and do not replace, being registered with an NHS GP or national NHS screening programmes.

Common questions

What are the signs of glaucoma?

Usually none in the early stages — that’s why screening is important. By the time you notice vision loss, damage may be advanced.

Who should be screened?

Anyone over 40, and earlier if you have a family history, African-Caribbean heritage, short-sightedness or diabetes.

Is the testing uncomfortable?

No — the pressure check, OCT scan and visual-field test are all quick and painless.

What happens if I have glaucoma?

We refer you promptly to an ophthalmologist. Most glaucoma is well controlled with daily eye drops, which protect your remaining vision.
