What semen analysis is

Semen analysis is a laboratory test of a semen sample. It reports on the main measures used to assess sperm: how many there are (concentration/count), how well they move (motility), their shape (morphology), and the volume and other properties of the sample.

Who it is for

It is commonly the first test when a couple has been trying to conceive without success, and it can also be used after a vasectomy check-up or before fertility treatment. If you are trying to conceive, your partner may also need assessment — fertility involves both people.

What is measured

  • Sperm concentration and total count
  • Motility (how well sperm move)
  • Morphology (sperm shape)
  • Semen volume and other basic properties

Results can vary from sample to sample, so an abnormal result is usually repeated after a few weeks before drawing conclusions.

What happens

What it cannot tell you

A semen analysis is an important piece of information, not a complete verdict on fertility. A result outside the reference range does not mean conception is impossible, and a normal result does not guarantee it. It also does not assess the female partner. Results are best interpreted by a clinician alongside your history.
