Eligibility & clinical assessment.

Who private weight management treatment is suitable for, what we assess before starting, and why we never begin treatment without an in-person medical review.

What we check before discussing treatment

Every patient. Every time. We make sure this is the right service for you — safely — before we talk about any treatment options.

  • Your relationship with food A short, sensitive conversation so we can support you well.
  • How you’re feeling mentally Mood, anxiety, sleep, and any current support you’re receiving.
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding If this applies, we’ll plan around it and still look after you.
  • Your medical history Thyroid, diabetes, heart, gallbladder or any other conditions.
  • Anything you’re currently taking Other treatments, supplements — so we can keep you safe.
  • Examination & blood tests Blood pressure, body composition, and blood tests where helpful.

Eligibility & clinical assessment.

Eligibility is decided by a doctor, on the whole clinical picture — not by a single number, and not by NHS funding rules.

Weight-management medicines are licensed for adults living with obesity, or overweight with a weight-related health condition. In practice the licensed indications centre on a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 or above alongside at least one weight-related condition (thresholds may be adjusted for some ethnic groups, where a lower BMI carries higher risk).

Weight-related conditions we consider

  • Type 2 diabetes or prediabetes
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Abnormal cholesterol or lipids (dyslipidaemia)
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Fatty liver disease (MASLD)
  • Weight-related joint problems and reduced mobility

Three different things people confuse

1. The MHRA licensed indication is what a medicine is authorised to treat. 2. NICE / NHS funding criteria decide who can access a medicine free on the NHS, usually through a specialist weight-management service — these are access rules, not the limits of the licence. 3. Appropriate private prescribing follows the licensed indication and an individual clinical assessment.

Eligibility for private treatment is determined following individual clinical assessment and the licensed indication of the medicine being considered. NHS eligibility thresholds do not automatically decide whether a private patient can be treated — and being private does not mean medicines are prescribed for cosmetic weight loss in people without an appropriate clinical indication. If you are not suitable, we will tell you honestly.
