Private menopause hormone blood test in London at Tower Bridge Hospital, East London
Doctor-led · Hormone profile · Results explained

Menopause blood test in London.

A menopause hormone profile can support an assessment of perimenopause and menopause. Importantly, in many women the diagnosis is made from symptoms and age — blood tests are not routinely required, but they can help in certain situations.

Educational information — not a substitute for clinical assessment

For most women over 45 with typical symptoms, menopause is a clinical diagnosis and routine blood testing is not needed. Hormone levels fluctuate in perimenopause, so a single result can mislead. Blood tests are more useful under 45, or where the picture is unclear.

What it checks

A menopause profile usually measures FSH and oestradiol, and often thyroid function, to help exclude other causes of similar symptoms. These give a snapshot of where hormone levels sit at the time of testing.

When it helps

  • Symptoms under the age of 45, where menopause is being considered
  • An unclear picture, or symptoms that could have another cause
  • After certain surgery or treatments affecting the ovaries
  • Where a result would genuinely change management

What is included

The panel is chosen for your situation. Because levels fluctuate in perimenopause, timing and interpretation matter, and testing may sometimes be repeated.

Often a clinical diagnosis

For most women over 45 with typical symptoms, menopause is diagnosed from the history alone — blood tests are not routinely needed and can even be misleading.

What happens

  1. A consultation about your symptoms, cycle and history.
  2. Blood tests where they will genuinely add information.
  3. A doctor-led review explaining the results in context.
  4. A discussion of options, including whether HRT may be appropriate.

Why bloods are not always needed

Hormones swing considerably during perimenopause, so a “normal” result does not exclude it and a single value can mislead. National guidance advises against routine testing in women over 45 with typical symptoms. We test when it will actually help, not by default.

Results & next steps

We explain what your results mean and discuss management, which may include lifestyle advice and a conversation about HRT where appropriate. See our Menopause & HRT clinic for fuller care.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the menopause profile?

The current price is on our Fees page.

Do I need a blood test to diagnose menopause?

Usually not. For most women over 45 with typical symptoms it is a clinical diagnosis; bloods are more useful under 45 or when the picture is unclear.

Can a normal result rule menopause out?

No. Hormones fluctuate in perimenopause, so a single result can be misleading and is interpreted alongside your symptoms.

Will you discuss HRT?

Yes, where appropriate. See our Menopause & HRT clinic for assessment and treatment.

When is testing most useful?

Under 45, after certain surgery or treatments, or where a result would genuinely change your management.
