Educational information — not a substitute for clinical assessment

This page describes psychosexual consultation in general terms to help you decide whether an assessment may be useful. It is not a diagnosis and does not promise a particular result. Suitability, the number of sessions and whether treatment is appropriate at all are decided at consultation. Outcomes vary between individuals and treatment is not suitable for everyone.

Why people come to us about this.

Not every sexual difficulty is best treated with a procedure. Many have a psychological component, and some are entirely psychological in origin. Treating those with a physical intervention alone rarely works.

What this condition actually is.

Psychosexual consultation addresses sexual difficulties where thoughts, feelings, anxiety and relationship dynamics play a significant part.

It is relevant on its own, and also alongside physical treatment — the two are not alternatives. Many men have both a physical contributor and a psychological one, each reinforcing the other.

This is a consultation-based service. It does not involve a procedure.

What you might be noticing.

  • Sexual difficulty that varies by situation or partner
  • Anxiety before or during sexual activity
  • Loss of desire without an identified physical cause
  • Difficulty that began after a specific event or period of stress
  • Avoidance of intimacy
  • Relationship strain arising from, or contributing to, sexual difficulty
  • Physical treatment that has not produced the expected improvement

What tends to cause it.

  • Performance anxiety and anticipatory worry
  • Depression, anxiety disorders and chronic stress
  • Relationship difficulty, communication problems or unresolved conflict
  • Past negative sexual experience
  • Body image concerns
  • Cultural, religious or family expectations creating conflict
  • The psychological consequences of a physical problem, which persist after it is treated

How treatment helps.

Consultation establishes what is contributing and in what proportion.

Where a physical cause is present, it is investigated properly rather than assumed absent.

Where psychological factors are prominent, addressing them directly is more effective than repeated physical treatment.

Where both are present, treating both together works better than either alone.

Why we use focal shockwave.

We use focal shockwave because it delivers energy to a defined depth — up to approximately 12 cm — allowing accurate treatment of deeper structures. Radial devices spread energy outwards from the applicator and lose intensity quickly, which limits them to more superficial targets.

Why focal reaches what radial cannot.

Pulses travel from the probe and converge on a target at depth. The dashed line marks where radial devices stop.

What to expect during treatment.

  1. Step 1

An unhurried, confidential consultation. There is no examination unless there is a physical question to answer.

  2. Step 2

Discussion of when the difficulty started, how it varies, and what else was happening at the time.

  3. Step 3

Questions about mood, stress, relationship and medication.

  4. Step 4

A shared view of what is likely to be contributing.

  5. Step 5

A plan, which may involve consultation here, physical investigation, referral to specialist therapy, or a combination.

Questions people usually ask.

Is this therapy?

It is a clinical consultation. Where formal psychosexual therapy is the right route, we can refer you.

Will I be examined?

Only if there is a physical question that requires it, and only with your consent.

Can my partner attend?

Yes, if you would both like that. Some sessions work better individually. Either is fine.

Is it confidential?

Yes. Consultations are private and records are held in line with UK data protection law.

What if there is a physical cause?

Then we investigate it. This clinic has a Specialist Urologist, so both routes are available.

Do I need a referral?

No.
