Other options

Other prescription weight-management medicines.

Beyond the best-known injections, several prescription options exist. Suitability is always individual.

Mounjaro and Wegovy are the medicines most people have heard of, but they are not the only prescription options, and they are not right for everyone. This page outlines other prescription medicines that may be relevant in medical weight management. As with all treatment, suitability is decided individually after assessment.

Prescription treatment is only provided where clinically appropriate following assessment by a qualified healthcare professional. The most appropriate treatment varies between individuals, and a particular medicine cannot be guaranteed before clinical assessment. These are prescription-only medicines, prescribed only after an in-person consultation — not sold on request.

The options

What else may be considered.

A factual outline — not a recommendation of any one product.

Oral GLP-1 (tablet) treatment

An oral (tablet) GLP-1 option is now authorised in the UK. A daily tablet can suit people who would prefer not to inject, though tablets have their own dosing rules and side-effect profile. Whether a tablet or an injection is appropriate is decided with you.

Orlistat

Orlistat works differently — it reduces the amount of fat absorbed from food rather than acting on appetite hormones. It is taken with meals and can cause gastrointestinal side effects related to dietary fat. It may suit some people, particularly where GLP-1 or dual-agonist medicines are unsuitable.

Other and older medicines

Other licensed obesity medicines exist and may occasionally be appropriate. Some widely discussed products are licensed for type 2 diabetes rather than weight management, and using a medicine outside its licence is a specific clinical decision made only where justified and clearly explained.

Choosing

How the right option is chosen.

Matched to you at assessment, not decided by marketing.

How the right option is chosen

The choice between medicines — or the decision not to use medication — depends on the licensed indication, your medical history and other medicines, contraindications, tolerability, your goals and your preference. Newer or “stronger” is not automatically better; a well-tolerated option you can stay on is often more useful.

Whatever the medicine, the same principles apply: prescribing only after assessment, treatment within a wider lifestyle plan, and regular monitoring and review.

Fees are the same across our weight-management service: an initial consultation is £150 (in person, 45 minutes) and ongoing monthly reviews are £99. Blood tests, where clinically indicated, are charged separately (lab fees from £150). Any medication cost is separate and depends on the treatment and dose that are clinically appropriate for you. See the weight-management pricing page for full details.
