What NIPT screens for

A safe, highly accurate screen

Non-invasive prenatal testing analyses fragments of your baby’s DNA found naturally in your blood. It is a screening test — highly accurate, but not diagnostic — and carries no risk of miscarriage.

  • Down’s syndrome (trisomy 21), Edwards’ (18) and Patau’s (13)
  • Sex chromosome conditions, where you choose to include them
  • Baby’s sex, if you wish to know
  • Options for extended panels (microdeletions) — discussed with you

How it works

From blood test to result

After a short consultation we take a simple blood sample from your arm (from 10 weeks). Results usually come back within about a week. We explain what a ‘low chance’ or ‘higher chance’ result means, and never leave you to interpret a number alone.

If your result needs follow-up

Support, whatever the result

A higher-chance result does not mean your baby is affected — it means a diagnostic test (such as CVS or amniocentesis) would give a definite answer. If that’s the case, we talk it through and refer you promptly to a fetal-medicine specialist. Whatever the outcome, you’ll have unhurried support.

Safe, joined-up care

GMC-registered clinicians, CQC-registered clinic

You’re seen by GMC-registered clinicians at our CQC-registered Whitechapel clinic. We keep clear, confidential records and, with your consent, share a summary with your NHS GP so your care stays joined up. A chaperone is available for any examination on request, at no charge.

You don’t need to be registered with us, and private care complements — it doesn’t replace — being registered with an NHS GP.

What we don’t do here

  • We are not an emergency service. For anything serious or life-threatening, call 999 or go to A&E. For urgent advice any time, NHS 111 is available 24/7.
  • We are an outpatient clinic and do not provide hospital admission or inpatient care.
  • Private care and screening complement, and do not replace, being registered with an NHS GP or national NHS screening programmes.

Common questions

When can I have NIPT?

From 10 weeks of pregnancy onwards. It only needs a maternal blood sample.

Is it safe for the baby?

Yes. NIPT is a blood test from your arm and carries no risk of miscarriage, unlike diagnostic tests such as amniocentesis.

Is NIPT diagnostic?

No — it’s a highly accurate screening test. A higher-chance result should be confirmed with a diagnostic test, which we can arrange.

Can I find out the sex?

Yes, NIPT can report your baby’s sex from 10 weeks if you choose. You can also opt out of that information.

Do you offer counselling with the result?

Always. We explain results clearly and, where needed, refer you to fetal-medicine specialists for further discussion and testing.
