Overview

What dermal fillers are.

Dermal fillers are gels made of hyaluronic acid (HA) — a sugar molecule that occurs naturally in skin and holds water. Injected into specific layers, HA filler adds volume, smooths folds and restores structure that is lost with age or is simply part of your natural anatomy. We use CE-marked HA products only.

HA fillers are the most widely used and best-understood injectable fillers, and a key reason we use them is that they are reversible: an enzyme called hyaluronidase can dissolve HA if a result needs adjusting or in the rare event of a complication. We do not use permanent or semi-permanent fillers.

Suitability

Who it may suit.

Filler can be appropriate for adults who want to restore age-related volume loss, improve balance and proportion, soften static folds, or subtly enhance a feature.

  • Volume loss in the cheeks or midface

  • Under-eye hollowing (tear trough), where anatomy is suitable

It is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, over an active skin infection at the site, or where expectations are unrealistic. If a different treatment (or no treatment) would serve you better, we will tell you.

Consultation

Assessment first, always.

Every treatment starts with a face-to-face consultation with a doctor. We assess your facial proportions dynamically and at rest, discuss what is realistically achievable, and plan conservatively — often treating one area at a time and reviewing, rather than doing everything in a single sitting. We do not offer remote or same-scroll “book-a-syringe” treatment.

We do not create separate treatments for every micro-area or trend. Individual areas are planned within one considered facial assessment.

What treatment involves

On the day.

Treatment is usually quick. After cleansing, we use numbing cream and often filler pre-mixed with local anaesthetic, then inject with a fine needle or a blunt-tipped cannula depending on the area. Results are visible immediately, though some swelling and occasional bruising settle over roughly 2–3 weeks, which is when the final result is best judged.

Outcomes & limits

Realistic expectations.

Filler restores volume and definition; it does not relax wrinkles (that is anti-wrinkle treatment) and it does not change skin quality (that is skin rejuvenation). Duration varies with the product, the area and your metabolism — commonly 6–18 months — after which the HA is gradually broken down by the body. Results are not guaranteed and vary between individuals.

Safety

Side effects and important risks.

Common, temporary effects include swelling, redness, tenderness and bruising at injection sites. Less common effects include lumps or asymmetry, which can often be adjusted or dissolved.

The most important risk is vascular occlusion — filler affecting a blood vessel — which is rare but a medical emergency that can threaten skin or, very rarely, vision. Being treated by a doctor in a hospital setting matters here: we are trained to recognise it early and keep hyaluronidase on site to dissolve filler urgently if needed. Any new severe pain, skin colour change or visual disturbance after treatment should be reported to us immediately.

When treatment should not proceed: active infection or cold sore at the site, certain skin conditions, pregnancy or breastfeeding, or where we judge the risk or expectation is not appropriate. “No” is a legitimate answer and we use it.

Aftercare

Looking after the result.

  • Keep the area clean and avoid make-up for the rest of the day
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, saunas and very hot environments for 24–48 hours
  • Avoid facials or other treatments over the area for about two weeks
  • Mild swelling or bruising is normal; arnica can help
  • Contact us promptly about severe or increasing pain, blanching or vision changes

FAQs

Common questions.

Do fillers look obvious?

Not when dosing is conservative and placement is planned to your anatomy. Our approach is to enhance proportion and support, not to over-fill. You can build gradually across appointments rather than doing everything at once.

How long do dermal fillers last?

It varies by product, area and individual metabolism — commonly in the region of 6–18 months. Lips and mobile areas tend to break down faster than structural areas such as cheeks or chin. Your doctor will give you a realistic estimate for the specific treatment.

Can filler be dissolved?

Yes. Hyaluronic-acid fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase where clinically appropriate — for example if you are unhappy with a result, if there is a lump, or in the rare event of a vascular complication.

Is the tear-trough (under-eye) area treated here?

Yes, we treat the tear trough, but it is one of the more technique-sensitive areas and is not right for everyone. Suitability is decided at assessment; if it is not appropriate for your anatomy we will say so.

Is it painted or injected?

Injected. We use fine needles or cannulas, usually with numbing cream and often filler pre-mixed with local anaesthetic, so most people find it very tolerable.
