Are steroid creams safe?

Used correctly, topical steroids are safe and effective for eczema — and under-treating a flare often causes more harm than the treatment. We follow NICE and BTS/SIGN guidance, show you exactly how much to use, and review regularly so your child gets the lowest effective treatment.

Safeguarding, consent & joined-up care

The safety of every child comes first

All our clinicians are trained in paediatric safeguarding (child protection) to the level their role requires, hold enhanced DBS checks, and work to national safeguarding guidance and our own safeguarding policy. If we are ever concerned about a child’s safety, we follow our safeguarding procedures and local child-protection pathways.

Consent and who should attend

A parent or legal guardian with parental responsibility should attend with children under 16, and we ask for the child’s and parent’s ID at the first visit. Where a young person is judged able to understand and decide about their own care (Gillick competence), we involve them fully while encouraging parental support.

Chaperones and privacy

A chaperone is offered for any examination, at no charge, and your child’s dignity and privacy are respected throughout. We keep clear, confidential records.

Working with your NHS GP

With your consent, we share relevant information with your child’s NHS GP so their care stays joined up and safe. You can ask for a copy of any letter or result.

What we don’t do here

  • We are not an emergency service. If your child is seriously unwell — struggling to breathe, unresponsive, having a fit, a stiff neck or a rash that does not fade under a glass — call 999 or go to the nearest A&E. The Royal London Hospital (about 5 minutes’ walk) has a paediatric emergency department.
  • We are an outpatient clinic and do not provide hospital admission or inpatient care.
  • We do not provide crisis or emergency mental-health care — our children’s mental health clinic is for planned assessments and reviews.

Being clear about our limits is part of keeping your child safe. If your child needs urgent or emergency care, please use 999, NHS 111 or A&E.

How do you diagnose asthma in children?

Through a careful history, examination and, where appropriate, simple breathing tests. Diagnosing asthma in young children can take time, and we explain our reasoning at each step.

Are steroid creams safe for my child’s eczema?

Yes, when used as directed. We give a clear plan for how much and how often, and review it so treatment stays safe and effective.

Can you check my child’s inhaler technique?

Yes — poor technique is one of the commonest reasons asthma isn’t controlled. We teach and check it with a spacer.

Do you provide an asthma action plan?

Yes — every child with asthma should have a written personalised action plan, and we provide one you can share with school.
