What they diagnose

Pinning down nerve & muscle problems

Nerve conduction studies (NCS) measure the speed and strength of signals in your nerves, and EMG (electromyography) checks the electrical activity of muscles. Together they help diagnose:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome and other trapped nerves
  • Peripheral neuropathy (numbness, tingling, weakness) — e.g. from diabetes
  • Sciatica and nerve-root problems
  • Muscle disorders and unexplained weakness

How we run it

Assessed here, tested with our partners

We assess your symptoms (see our MSK service), then arrange NCS/EMG and specialist neurophysiology reporting through our partners. The tests take a little time and involve small electrical pulses and, for EMG, a fine needle — uncomfortable briefly but well tolerated.

This is an assess, scan and refer service. Where treatment or specialist management is needed, we arrange it promptly through our trusted consultant and imaging partners.

What happens next

Results tell us exactly which nerve or muscle is affected and how badly — which guides treatment, from a wrist splint or injection to surgery. We explain the findings and arrange the right referral, whether that’s hand surgery, neurology or physiotherapy.

You’re seen by GMC-registered clinicians at our CQC-registered Whitechapel clinic. We keep clear, confidential records and, with your consent, share a summary with your NHS GP so your care stays joined up. A chaperone is available for any examination on request, at no charge.

You don’t need to be registered with us, and private care complements — it doesn’t replace — being registered with an NHS GP.

What we don’t do here

  • We are not an emergency service. For anything serious or life-threatening, call 999 or go to A&E. For urgent advice any time, NHS 111 is available 24/7.
  • We are an outpatient clinic and do not provide hospital admission or inpatient care.

Common questions

What conditions do these tests diagnose?

Most commonly carpal tunnel syndrome, trapped nerves, sciatica and peripheral neuropathy, plus some muscle disorders.

Do the tests hurt?

Nerve conduction studies involve small electric pulses (a brief tingle). EMG uses a fine needle in the muscle, which is uncomfortable but quick and well tolerated.
