Blood tests alone do not diagnose PCOS. A diagnosis is made clinically, using recognised criteria that combine symptoms, examination, an ultrasound of the ovaries and blood results — and by ruling out other conditions.

What it checks

A PCOS profile looks at hormones that are relevant when PCOS is being considered — which may include testosterone and SHBG, LH and FSH, and other markers — and often thyroid and prolactin to help exclude other causes of similar symptoms.

What is included

The panel is selected for your symptoms. Some hormones are best measured at a particular point in the cycle, which we will advise on when you book.

Bloods are one piece

PCOS is a clinical diagnosis. Blood results are interpreted alongside your symptoms, an examination and, where appropriate, an ultrasound — not read in isolation.

How PCOS is diagnosed

Recognised criteria require a combination of features — typically two of three: irregular ovulation, signs of raised androgens (clinical or on bloods), and polycystic ovaries on ultrasound — together with excluding other conditions. That is why assessment matters more than any single number.

What bloods cannot do

A hormone profile cannot on its own confirm or exclude PCOS, and a “normal” panel does not rule it out. It also does not assess long-term aspects of PCOS that need ongoing care. Results are a starting point for a clinical conversation.
