What it measures
Inflammation you can measure
FeNO stands for Fractional exhaled Nitric Oxide. When the airways are inflamed — as in allergic asthma — nitric oxide levels in your breath rise. Measuring it gives an objective marker that a simple examination can’t.

How it works
One steady breath

What does a FeNO test involve?
Breathing out steadily into a small device for about ten seconds. The result is immediate — there are no needles or radiation.
Can it diagnose asthma on its own?
No single test diagnoses asthma. FeNO is a valuable objective marker that we combine with your symptoms and lung-function testing.
Is it useful if I already have asthma?
Yes — it helps show whether your airway inflammation is controlled and can guide adjustments to your inhalers.
Who should have a FeNO test?
Anyone with suspected asthma, or with asthma that’s hard to control, can benefit. We’ll advise if it’s useful for you.
Will I see a GP or a consultant?
This clinic is GP-led: you are assessed by one of our GMC-registered doctors, who arranges tests where they are indicated and refers you on to the right specialist when that is the best next step.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can book directly with us. If you have a referral letter or previous results, bring them along — they help us avoid repeating tests.
