Children’s Allergy Testing London at Tower Bridge Hospital, East London
Children’s allergy · Testing & advice · Ages 0–18

Children’s allergy testing, clearly explained.

Food allergies, eczema flare-ups, hay fever and reactions can be frightening and confusing. We assess your child’s symptoms, arrange the right tests, and give you a clear, practical plan — including what to avoid and exactly what to do in a reaction.

If your child is seriously unwell — call 999 or take them to A&E. We're a private outpatient service, not an emergency service. The Royal London Hospital (5 minutes' walk) has a paediatric A&E.

What we test for

Common childhood allergies

We assess and, where useful, test for:

  • Suspected food allergies (milk, egg, peanut, tree nut, sesame, fish, shellfish, wheat, soya)
  • Hay fever (allergic rhinitis) and pollen allergy
  • Pet and house-dust-mite allergy
  • Eczema with a possible allergy trigger
  • Hives (urticaria) and swelling
  • Reactions to insect stings
  • Advice on adrenaline auto-injectors and written allergy action plans

How it works

Testing that actually answers the question

  1. A consultation and detailed allergy history — often the most important part.
  2. Skin-prick and/or specific IgE blood tests where they will help.
  3. Results explained in plain language, with a clear diagnosis where possible.
  4. A written management and avoidance plan you can share with school or nursery.
  5. Prescriptions (antihistamines, adrenaline auto-injectors) and follow-up if needed.

Doing it safely

Tests interpreted with the story, not in isolation

Why history matters

We follow NICE and national allergy guidance. Allergy tests are only meaningful alongside your child’s symptoms — a positive test does not always mean an allergy. We interpret them together to give an accurate answer and to avoid unnecessary, restrictive food avoidance.

Safety & consent

Safeguarding, consent & joined-up care

The safety of every child comes first

All our clinicians are trained in paediatric safeguarding (child protection) to the level their role requires, hold enhanced DBS checks, and work to national safeguarding guidance and our own safeguarding policy. If we are ever concerned about a child’s safety, we follow our safeguarding procedures and local child-protection pathways.

Consent and who should attend

A parent or legal guardian with parental responsibility should attend with children under 16, and we ask for the child’s and parent’s ID at the first visit. Where a young person is judged able to understand and decide about their own care (Gillick competence), we involve them fully while encouraging parental support.

Chaperones and privacy

A chaperone is offered for any examination, at no charge, and your child’s dignity and privacy are respected throughout. We keep clear, confidential records.

Working with your NHS GP

With your consent, we share relevant information with your child’s NHS GP so their care stays joined up and safe. You can ask for a copy of any letter or result.

What we don’t do here

  • We are not an emergency service. If your child is seriously unwell — struggling to breathe, unresponsive, having a fit, a stiff neck or a rash that does not fade under a glass — call 999 or go to the nearest A&E. The Royal London Hospital (about 5 minutes’ walk) has a paediatric emergency department.
  • We are an outpatient clinic and do not provide hospital admission or inpatient care.
  • We do not provide crisis or emergency mental-health care — our children’s mental health clinic is for planned assessments and reviews.
  • Food challenge tests that need resuscitation facilities are arranged in an appropriate hospital setting, not in clinic.

Being clear about our limits is part of keeping your child safe. If your child needs urgent or emergency care, please use 999, NHS 111 or A&E.

Good to know

Common questions

What allergies can you test for?

Common food and environmental allergies, using skin-prick tests and/or blood (specific IgE) tests, chosen to fit your child’s history.

Is skin-prick testing safe for young children?

Yes — it is well tolerated and done by trained staff, with antihistamines to hand. Serious reactions are very rare.

Do you provide EpiPens and written action plans?

Yes. Where an adrenaline auto-injector is appropriate, we prescribe it, show you how to use it, and provide a written allergy action plan.

My child had a severe reaction — what should I do?

If a reaction is severe (difficulty breathing, swelling of the mouth or throat, floppiness), call 999 — this is an emergency. Afterwards, book with us to put a clear prevention and action plan in place.
