Children’s Bedwetting & Constipation Clinic London at Tower Bridge Hospital, East London
Bedwetting & constipation · Children · Ages 0–18

Bedwetting & constipation, sorted with a plan.

Bedwetting and constipation are extremely common, very treatable, and nothing to be embarrassed about. We find the cause, rule out anything that needs attention, and give you a clear, kind plan that actually works.

Kind & practical
no blame
NICE-aligned
evidence-based
Ages 0–18

If your child is seriously unwell — call 999 or take them to A&E. We're a private outpatient service, not an emergency service. The Royal London Hospital (5 minutes' walk) has a paediatric A&E.

What we help with

Bladder and bowel problems in children

  • Night-time wetting (bedwetting / nocturnal enuresis)
  • Daytime wetting and urgency
  • Constipation and soiling (encopresis)
  • Toilet-training difficulties
  • Recurrent urine infections
  • Diet, fluid and routine advice
  • Medication where appropriate (such as laxatives or desmopressin), with review
  • Advice on bedwetting alarms

How it works

A step-by-step plan for the whole family

  1. A gentle history and examination — and reassurance that this is common.
  2. Simple checks (such as a urine dip) where they help.
  3. A clear explanation of what’s driving it.
  4. A practical, step-by-step plan you can follow at home.
  5. Medication if it’s needed, with a follow-up to keep things on track.

Our approach

Common, treatable, and never your child’s fault

No blame, just a plan

Bedwetting and constipation are medical, not behavioural — telling a child off doesn’t work and isn’t fair. We follow NICE guidance, treat the whole picture (bladder and bowel are linked), and support the family through it.

Safety & consent

Safeguarding, consent & joined-up care

The safety of every child comes first

All our clinicians are trained in paediatric safeguarding (child protection) to the level their role requires, hold enhanced DBS checks, and work to national safeguarding guidance and our own safeguarding policy. If we are ever concerned about a child’s safety, we follow our safeguarding procedures and local child-protection pathways.

Consent and who should attend

A parent or legal guardian with parental responsibility should attend with children under 16, and we ask for the child’s and parent’s ID at the first visit. Where a young person is judged able to understand and decide about their own care (Gillick competence), we involve them fully while encouraging parental support.

Chaperones and privacy

A chaperone is offered for any examination, at no charge, and your child’s dignity and privacy are respected throughout. We keep clear, confidential records.

Working with your NHS GP

With your consent, we share relevant information with your child’s NHS GP so their care stays joined up and safe. You can ask for a copy of any letter or result.

What we don’t do here

  • We are not an emergency service. If your child is seriously unwell — struggling to breathe, unresponsive, having a fit, a stiff neck or a rash that does not fade under a glass — call 999 or go to the nearest A&E. The Royal London Hospital (about 5 minutes’ walk) has a paediatric emergency department.
  • We are an outpatient clinic and do not provide hospital admission or inpatient care.
  • We do not provide crisis or emergency mental-health care — our children’s mental health clinic is for planned assessments and reviews.

Being clear about our limits is part of keeping your child safe. If your child needs urgent or emergency care, please use 999, NHS 111 or A&E.

Good to know

Common questions

At what age should I worry about bedwetting?

Bedwetting is very common and often normal up to and beyond age 5. We can help from around age 5, and earlier if there are daytime symptoms or other concerns.

Is constipation serious?

Usually not — but it’s worth treating properly, because untreated constipation can cause soiling, pain and recurrent problems. It responds well to a clear plan.

Do you prescribe medicines?

Yes, when appropriate — for example laxatives for constipation or desmopressin for bedwetting — always with review.

Will my child need invasive tests?

Rarely. Most children need only a history, examination and simple checks. We only arrange further tests if there’s a specific reason.
