What it helps

Relief without surgery

Prolapse is common, especially after childbirth or the menopause, and a pessary supports the vaginal walls and pelvic organs so symptoms ease. It’s a good option if you’d prefer to avoid surgery, aren’t ready for it, or want relief in the meantime.

  • A sensation of a lump, bulge or ‘something coming down’
  • Heaviness or dragging in the pelvis, worse by the end of the day
  • Prolapse affecting comfort, activity or bladder symptoms

Assessment & fitting

Getting the right fit

We take a full history, examine you to grade the prolapse, and fit a pessary in the right shape and size (commonly ring or shelf types). A chaperone is offered, at no charge. Most women feel immediate relief; we make sure it’s comfortable before you leave and show you what to expect.

Reviews to keep you comfortable

Pessaries need periodic changing and checks (typically every few months), which we do for you. If your symptoms are complex, or you’d like to consider surgical options, we’ll refer you to a specialist urogynaecologist.

Safe, joined-up care

GMC-registered clinicians, CQC-registered clinic

You’re seen by GMC-registered clinicians at our CQC-registered Whitechapel clinic. We keep clear, confidential records and, with your consent, share a summary with your NHS GP so your care stays joined up. A chaperone is available for any examination on request, at no charge.

You don’t need to be registered with us, and private care complements — it doesn’t replace — being registered with an NHS GP.

What we don’t do here

  • We are not an emergency service. For anything serious or life-threatening, call 999 or go to A&E. For urgent advice any time, NHS 111 is available 24/7.
  • We are an outpatient clinic and do not provide hospital admission or inpatient care.
  • Private care and screening complement, and do not replace, being registered with an NHS GP or national NHS screening programmes.

What is a pessary?

A soft, medical-grade device placed in the vagina to support prolapsed organs and relieve symptoms — a non-surgical alternative or interim measure.

Will it be uncomfortable?

A well-fitted pessary shouldn’t be felt. We check the fit before you leave and adjust the size if needed.

How often does it need changing?

Typically every few months, depending on the type. We’ll arrange regular reviews to change and check it.

Can I still consider surgery later?

Yes. A pessary doesn’t prevent future surgery — if you’d like to explore surgical repair, we’ll refer you to a urogynaecologist.
