Why this should only be done by a qualified surgeon in a registered clinic.

Circumcision is a surgical procedure. The decision to have it done in a CQC-registered clinic by a Consultant Plastic Surgeon, rather than at home or by an unregulated practitioner, is one of the single most important things a family can do to protect their child or themselves.

A real surgeon, not a technician

Dr Oezdogan is a GMC-registered Consultant Plastic Surgeon. He has trained for over a decade to manage tissue, control bleeding, recognise anatomical variations, and respond to complications safely. Many circumcisions in the UK are still performed by individuals with no formal surgical qualifications — this is a serious risk you should not take.

CQC-registered — regulated for safety

Our clinical premises, sterilisation protocols, infection prevention, equipment, and consent processes must meet national standards. Home circumcisions and unregistered settings are not subject to any of these safeguards.

Proper anaesthetic — not just “quick”

We use age-appropriate anaesthetic. Topical and/or local anaesthetic blocks for infants; local for older children and adults. Pain relief continues for the days after the procedure. Speed of the procedure has nothing to do with the quality of the result — we are unhurried, careful, and trained to recognise when something needs more attention.

Emergency-ready, not just routine

Complications from circumcision are rare but can be serious — bleeding, infection, or anaesthetic reaction. In a CQC-registered clinic with a qualified surgeon, we are equipped and trained to manage all of these immediately. In an unregulated setting, a complication can become an emergency very quickly — sometimes with permanent consequences.

Proper consent and safeguarding

UK law and GMC guidance set out clear consent requirements — particularly for children. We follow them rigorously. Both parents (or legal guardians) with parental responsibility must consent in writing in our clinic. Older children are included in the conversation. Adults must give their own informed consent. Records are kept securely.

Aftercare you can rely on

Every family or patient goes home with written aftercare guidance and direct WhatsApp / phone contact for any concerns. A follow-up review is included. If you do need to be seen urgently, we’re here — a luxury you simply don’t have if the procedure was done by someone you can’t reach afterwards.

Routine circumcision in the first weeks of life is a common practice for many families. We see families in a calm clinical setting with both parents present, and discuss timing, technique, and aftercare in detail.

Older children and adolescents

For older children we’ll always include the child in the conversation in an age-appropriate way and check that the procedure is something they understand. The surgical approach is adapted accordingly.

Adults

Adults choose circumcision for religious, cultural, personal, or hygiene reasons. We perform the procedure under local anaesthetic with the same surgical technique and attention to comfort.

What to expect.

A clear, unhurried process from first contact to recovery. We give you time to ask questions, see the clinic, and meet the surgeon before committing.

    Initial consultation

    You’ll meet Dr Oezdogan to discuss your reasons for the procedure, your or your child’s medical history, and what the procedure involves. There’s no pressure to proceed — this is a chance for you to ask questions and decide whether it’s right for you.

    Consent and planning

    Once you’re ready, we’ll go through a detailed written consent process. We explain the technique, the realistic risks and benefits, and what aftercare will involve. For children, both parents with parental responsibility must consent in person.

  3. 03

    The procedure

    Performed in our minor procedures suite at 97-99 Whitechapel Road. The procedure itself takes around 30 minutes; total clinic time is usually 60–90 minutes including preparation, recovery, and aftercare advice. Family members can usually be present.

    Aftercare and follow-up

    You’ll go home with written aftercare instructions and direct contact for any concerns. A follow-up appointment is included so we can check healing and address any questions. We’re available by phone and WhatsApp throughout your recovery.

Questions answered.

Is the procedure performed under anaesthetic?

Yes. For infants we use a topical and/or local anaesthetic block depending on age and clinical judgement. For older children and adults, local anaesthetic is used. Pain relief is provided throughout and for the days following the procedure. We don’t use general anaesthetic in clinic — if that’s required for any reason, we’ll refer onward to a hospital setting.

What are the risks?

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks including bleeding, infection, and reaction to anaesthetic. Less common complications include wound healing problems, scarring, or the need for revision. Dr Oezdogan will discuss all relevant risks specific to your or your child’s situation during consultation, and you’ll have time to consider before signing consent.

How long is recovery?

For infants and young children, healing is usually well underway within 7–10 days, with full healing taking 2–3 weeks. Older children may need a couple of days off school. Adults usually take 1–2 weeks before returning to normal activities including exercise and intimate activity. Detailed aftercare instructions are provided in writing.

Is this covered by private medical insurance?

Non-medical (religious, cultural, or personal-choice) circumcision is generally not covered by private medical insurance, as it’s not considered medically necessary. If the procedure is being recommended for a medical reason (e.g. recurrent infection, phimosis, paraphimosis), some insurers will cover it — we’ll help you check.

Do you accept walk-ins?

We don’t perform the procedure on a walk-in basis. We always start with a consultation so Dr Oezdogan can examine the patient, take a proper history, and answer your questions. The procedure itself is then booked for a separate appointment, usually within the same week. This allows time for informed consent and proper preparation.

What if my GP wants to be informed?

With your consent, we’ll write to your NHS GP so your records stay joined up. This is especially important for younger children. If you’d prefer the procedure not to be shared with your GP, please let us know — we’ll respect that choice unless there’s a specific safeguarding concern.
