It is particularly good at finding gallstones, a fatty or enlarged liver, kidney stones and cysts, and free fluid — and at giving reassurance when the organs look normal.

How to prepare and what to expect

Please do not eat for 6 hours before the scan (you may sip water and take medication). This empties the gallbladder-related bowel gas and gives clear views of the liver and pancreas. If you can, arrive with a comfortably full bladder for the pelvic views. Your scan takes around 15–30 minutes. During the scan a small amount of warm gel is applied and the probe is moved gently over the area. It is painless and there is no radiation. You will receive a doctor-led written report, usually the same day or shortly afterwards, with clear advice on any next steps. We are open 7 days a week, 9am–7pm, with same-day and walk-in appointments in Whitechapel, East London.
