A thyroid ultrasound assesses the size and structure of your thyroid gland and any nodules. It is a safe, painless scan that uses sound waves — no radiation — and is interpreted by an experienced clinician who provides a clear written report.
A thyroid ultrasound assesses the size and texture of the thyroid gland in the front of the neck and characterises any nodules. It is used for a neck lump or swelling, an abnormal thyroid blood test, a known nodule that needs monitoring, or difficulty swallowing. We describe each nodule's size and features (using recognised risk scoring) and use Doppler to assess blood flow, which helps decide whether a needle biopsy is needed.
A thyroid ultrasound at Tower Bridge Hospital is commonly used to look for and assess:
Your scan is interpreted by an experienced clinician who explains the findings in a clear written report, with advice on any next steps. A normal scan is often just as valuable — giving you firm reassurance.
People commonly have a thyroid ultrasound for reasons such as:
One flat fee. Every diagnostic ultrasound is the same price — we do not itemise or add a separate report fee. See our price list for the current fee.
No preparation is needed. Wearing an open-necked top makes it easier to scan the front of the neck. The scan is quick and comfortable and involves lying back with the neck slightly extended. Your scan takes around 15–30 minutes. During the scan a small amount of warm gel is applied and the probe is moved gently over the area. It is painless and there is no radiation. You will receive a doctor-led written report, usually the same day or shortly afterwards, with clear advice on any next steps. We are open 7 days a week, 9am–7pm, with same-day and walk-in appointments in Whitechapel, East London.
It cannot give a definite diagnosis, but it grades nodules by their risk features. Most nodules are benign; those with concerning features can be referred for a fine-needle biopsy, which the report will advise on.
A scan is useful when there is a lump, an enlarged gland or a nodule to assess. Blood tests measure thyroid function; ultrasound looks at the structure, so the two are complementary.
We charge one flat fee for any diagnostic ultrasound, with no itemising and no separate report fee. See our fees page for the current price.
No referral is needed for most scans — you can book directly. A small number of specialist scans are done on referral; we will tell you clearly if that applies.
Most scans take 15–30 minutes and you receive a doctor-led written report, usually the same day or shortly afterwards.
