A thyroid ultrasound assesses the size and structure of your thyroid gland and any nodules. It is a safe, painless scan that uses sound waves — no radiation — and is interpreted by an experienced clinician who provides a clear written report.
A thyroid ultrasound assesses the size and texture of the thyroid gland in the front of the neck and characterises any nodules. It is used for a neck lump or swelling, an abnormal thyroid blood test, a known nodule that needs monitoring, or difficulty swallowing. We describe each nodule's size and features (using recognised risk scoring) and use Doppler to assess blood flow, which helps decide whether a needle biopsy is needed.
