A renal ultrasound assesses your kidneys, ureters and bladder, including how well your bladder empties. It is a safe, painless scan that uses sound waves — no radiation — and is interpreted by an experienced clinician who provides a clear written report.
A renal and urinary tract ultrasound examines both kidneys, the bladder and the ureters where they can be seen, and measures how completely your bladder empties (pre- and post-void residual). It is the key first test for blood in the urine, recurrent urine infections, loin pain and abnormal kidney function, and it can find stones, cysts, obstruction (hydronephrosis) and bladder-wall changes without any radiation.

Please arrive with a full bladder — drink about 1 litre of water an hour before and try not to empty your bladder.
A full bladder is essential for accurate bladder-wall and post-void residual measurements.
Your scan takes around 15–30 minutes.
During the scan a small amount of warm gel is applied and the probe is moved gently over the area.
It is painless and there is no radiation.
You will receive a doctor-led written report, usually the same day or shortly afterwards, with clear advice on any next steps.
