It is the key first test for blood in the urine, recurrent urine infections, loin pain and abnormal kidney function, and it can find stones, cysts, obstruction (hydronephrosis) and bladder-wall changes without any radiation.

How to prepare and what to expect

Please arrive with a full bladder — drink about 1 litre of water an hour before and try not to empty your bladder. A full bladder is essential for accurate bladder-wall and post-void residual measurements. Your scan takes around 15–30 minutes. During the scan a small amount of warm gel is applied and the probe is moved gently over the area. It is painless and there is no radiation. You will receive a doctor-led written report, usually the same day or shortly afterwards, with clear advice on any next steps.
