What a liver ultrasound scan looks at

A liver-focused ultrasound looks closely at the liver for fatty change, scarring and focal lesions. It is a safe, painless scan that uses sound waves — no radiation — and is interpreted by an experienced clinician who provides a clear written report.

A liver-focused ultrasound looks closely at the liver when blood tests (LFTs) are abnormal, when fatty liver disease is suspected, or to monitor a known liver condition. It assesses the size and texture of the liver, shows fatty change and scarring, and characterises cysts, haemangiomas and other focal lesions. Ultrasound is the usual first step before deciding whether any further tests are needed.

Your scan is interpreted by an experienced clinician who explains the findings in a clear written report, with advice on any next steps. A normal scan is often just as valuable — giving you firm reassurance.

One flat fee. Every diagnostic ultrasound is the same price — we do not itemise or add a separate report fee. See our price list for the current fee.

How to prepare and what to expect

Please do not eat for 6 hours before the scan. Fasting reduces bowel gas and gives the clearest, most reliable views of the liver and surrounding structures. Water and medication are fine. Your scan takes around 15–30 minutes. During the scan a small amount of warm gel is applied and the probe is moved gently over the area. It is painless and there is no radiation. You will receive a doctor-led written report, usually the same day or shortly afterwards, with clear advice on any next steps. We are open 7 days a week, 9am–7pm, with same-day and walk-in appointments in Whitechapel, East London.

Liver Ultrasound — common questions

Can ultrasound diagnose fatty liver disease?

Yes — ultrasound is a very common way to detect fatty liver. It shows the characteristic bright appearance of fatty change and can suggest more advanced scarring, though specialist tests may be advised to grade it.

Will a liver scan show if I have cirrhosis?

Ultrasound can show features that suggest cirrhosis, such as an irregular liver surface and coarse texture, and signs of raised pressure. Confirmation sometimes needs additional imaging or tests.

How much does a liver ultrasound scan cost?

We charge one flat fee for any diagnostic ultrasound, with no itemising and no separate report fee. See our fees page for the current price.

Do I need a GP referral for a liver ultrasound scan?

No referral is needed for most scans — you can book directly. A small number of specialist scans are done on referral; we will tell you clearly if that applies.

How long does the scan take and when do I get results?

Most scans take 15–30 minutes and you receive a doctor-led written report, usually the same day or shortly afterwards.
