How to prepare and what to expect

For the transabdominal scan please arrive with a full bladder (drink about 1 litre of water an hour before). If a transvaginal scan is needed for closer views, you will be asked to empty your bladder for that part. Your scan takes around 15–30 minutes. During the scan a small amount of warm gel is applied and the probe is moved gently over the area. It is painless and there is no radiation. You will receive a doctor-led written report, usually the same day or shortly afterwards, with clear advice on any next steps.
