What a ankle & foot ultrasound looks at

An ankle and foot ultrasound assesses the Achilles tendon, plantar fascia, Morton's neuroma and ligaments. It is a safe, painless scan that uses sound waves — no radiation — and is interpreted by an experienced clinician who provides a clear written report.

An ankle and foot ultrasound assesses the Achilles tendon, plantar fascia, Morton's neuroma and the ankle ligaments and tendons. It is used for heel or Achilles pain, pain in the ball of the foot, a suspected ligament tear, or ankle swelling after an injury. We can scan while you move the foot to assess the tendons dynamically and reproduce a Morton's neuroma click.

How to prepare and what to expect

No preparation is needed. Wear clothing that allows the lower leg and foot to be exposed, and be prepared to remove shoes and socks. We may move the foot during the scan. Your scan takes around 15–30 minutes. During the scan a small amount of warm gel is applied and the probe is moved gently over the area. It is painless and there is no radiation. You will receive a doctor-led written report, usually the same day or shortly afterwards, with clear advice on any next steps. We are open 7 days a week, 9am–7pm, with same-day and walk-in appointments in Whitechapel, East London.

Ankle & Foot Ultrasound — common questions

Can ultrasound diagnose plantar fasciitis and Achilles problems?

Yes. Ultrasound shows thickening of the plantar fascia in plantar fasciitis and assesses the Achilles tendon for tendinopathy and tears, which guides treatment.

What causes pain in the ball of my foot?

A common cause is Morton's neuroma, which ultrasound can detect between the toes, along with other soft-tissue and joint problems in the forefoot.

How much does a ankle & foot ultrasound cost?

We charge one flat fee for any diagnostic ultrasound, with no itemising and no separate report fee. See our fees page for the current price.

Do I need a GP referral for a ankle & foot ultrasound?

No referral is needed for most scans — you can book directly. A small number of specialist scans are done on referral; we will tell you clearly if that applies.

How long does the scan take and when do I get results?

Most scans take 15–30 minutes and you receive a doctor-led written report, usually the same day or shortly afterwards.
