A shoulder ultrasound is one of the best tests for the common causes of shoulder pain, and it has a real advantage over MRI for the rotator cuff: we can scan the shoulder while you move it, so tears and impingement are seen dynamically in real time. It is ideal for shoulder pain or weakness, pain lifting the arm or at night, a suspected rotator cuff tear, or a sports or overuse injury.

No preparation is needed.
Wear a top that allows the shoulder and upper arm to be exposed easily.
During the scan you will be asked to move the arm so we can assess the cuff dynamically.
Your scan takes around 15–30 minutes.
During the scan a small amount of warm gel is applied and the probe is moved gently over the area.
It is painless and there is no radiation.

Yes — ultrasound is highly accurate for rotator cuff tears and, because we scan while you move the shoulder, it can show tears and impingement that a static scan might miss.
For the rotator cuff and bursa, ultrasound is comparable to MRI and adds real-time movement. MRI is better for the deep joint and bone, so we advise if MRI would add anything.
