A knee ultrasound assesses soft-tissue causes of knee pain and swelling, including a Baker's (popliteal) cyst, patellar and quadriceps tendon problems, collateral ligaments and bursitis. It is used for swelling behind the knee, pain at the front of the knee, a suspected tendon injury, or general knee swelling. (Cruciate ligaments and menisci deep inside the knee need MRI, and we will say if that is required.)

How to prepare and what to expect

No preparation is needed. Wear clothing that allows the knee to be exposed, or shorts. We may bend the knee during the scan to assess the tendons and any cyst. Your scan takes around 15–30 minutes. During the scan a small amount of warm gel is applied and the probe is moved gently over the area. It is painless and there is no radiation. You will receive a doctor-led written report, usually the same day or shortly afterwards, with clear advice on any next steps. What is the swelling behind my knee?

A common cause is a Baker's cyst, which ultrasound diagnoses easily and distinguishes from a more serious cause such as a clot. Your report will make the finding clear.
