What a transvaginal pelvic ultrasound looks at

A transvaginal ultrasound gives detailed, close-up images of the uterus, ovaries and endometrium. It is a safe, painless scan that uses sound waves — no radiation — and is interpreted by an experienced clinician who provides a clear written report.

A transvaginal ultrasound gives detailed, close-up images of the uterus, ovaries and endometrium by placing a slim probe just inside the vagina — much closer to the pelvic organs than a scan over the tummy. It is used for pelvic pain, abnormal or heavy bleeding, suspected polyps or small cysts, or when a clearer view than a tummy scan allows is needed. A chaperone is always offered and your consent is obtained first.

A transvaginal pelvic ultrasound at Tower Bridge Hospital is commonly used to look for and assess:

Your scan is interpreted by an experienced clinician who explains the findings in a clear written report, with advice on any next steps. A normal scan is often just as valuable — giving you firm reassurance.

One flat fee. Every diagnostic ultrasound is the same price — we do not itemise or add a separate report fee. See our price list for the current fee.

How to prepare and what to expect

Please empty your bladder just before this scan (the opposite of a tummy scan). A chaperone is always offered, and your consent is obtained before the examination, which is carried out with care. Your scan takes around 15–30 minutes. During the scan a small amount of warm gel is applied and the probe is moved gently over the area. It is painless and there is no radiation. You will receive a doctor-led written report, usually the same day or shortly afterwards, with clear advice on any next steps. We are open 7 days a week, 9am–7pm, with same-day and walk-in appointments in Whitechapel, East London.

Transvaginal Pelvic Ultrasound — common questions

Why choose a transvaginal scan over a tummy scan?

It places the probe much closer to the uterus and ovaries, giving clearer, more detailed images — especially useful for the womb lining, small polyps and ovarian detail.

Is a transvaginal scan uncomfortable?

Most women find it well tolerated. It is carried out gently and with care, a chaperone is offered, and you can ask to stop at any point.

How much does a transvaginal pelvic ultrasound cost?

We charge one flat fee for any diagnostic ultrasound, with no itemising and no separate report fee. See our fees page for the current price.

Do I need a GP referral for a transvaginal pelvic ultrasound?

No referral is needed for most scans — you can book directly. A small number of specialist scans are done on referral; we will tell you clearly if that applies.

How long does the scan take and when do I get results?

Most scans take 15–30 minutes and you receive a doctor-led written report, usually the same day or shortly afterwards.
