What a prostate ultrasound (transabdominal) looks at

A transabdominal prostate ultrasound assesses prostate size and how well the bladder empties. It is a safe, painless scan that uses sound waves — no radiation — and is interpreted by an experienced clinician who provides a clear written report.

A transabdominal prostate ultrasound assesses the size of the prostate and how well the bladder empties, done over the lower tummy with a full bladder. It is used for a weak or slow urinary stream, needing to pass urine frequently or at night, a suspected enlarged prostate, or incomplete emptying. It estimates prostate volume and measures the urine left after you pass water.

Your scan is interpreted by an experienced clinician who explains the findings in a clear written report, with advice on any next steps. A normal scan is often just as valuable — giving you firm reassurance.

One flat fee. Every diagnostic ultrasound is the same price — we do not itemise or add a separate report fee. See our price list for the current fee.

How to prepare and what to expect

Please arrive with a full bladder (drink about 1 litre of water an hour before, don't empty beforehand). You will pass urine part-way through so we can measure how completely the bladder empties. Your scan takes around 15–30 minutes. During the scan a small amount of warm gel is applied and the probe is moved gently over the area. It is painless and there is no radiation. You will receive a doctor-led written report, usually the same day or shortly afterwards, with clear advice on any next steps. We are open 7 days a week, 9am–7pm, with same-day and walk-in appointments in Whitechapel, East London.

Prostate Ultrasound — common questions

Is this the same as a transrectal prostate scan?

No. This is a transabdominal scan done over the lower tummy, which estimates prostate size and bladder emptying. It is not a transrectal (TRUS) scan or a biopsy.

What can this scan tell me about my urinary symptoms?

It shows whether the prostate is enlarged and whether your bladder empties fully, both of which are common causes of urinary symptoms in men.

How much does a prostate ultrasound (transabdominal) cost?

We charge one flat fee for any diagnostic ultrasound, with no itemising and no separate report fee. See our fees page for the current price.

Do I need a GP referral for a prostate ultrasound (transabdominal)?

No referral is needed for most scans — you can book directly. A small number of specialist scans are done on referral; we will tell you clearly if that applies.

How long does the scan take and when do I get results?

Most scans take 15–30 minutes and you receive a doctor-led written report, usually the same day or shortly afterwards.
