A transabdominal prostate ultrasound assesses the size of the prostate and how well the bladder empties, done over the lower tummy with a full bladder. It is used for a weak or slow urinary stream, needing to pass urine frequently or at night, a suspected enlarged prostate, or incomplete emptying. It estimates prostate volume and measures the urine left after you pass water.

Please arrive with a full bladder (drink about 1 litre of water an hour before, don't empty beforehand).
You will pass urine part-way through so we can measure how completely the bladder empties.
Your scan takes around 15–30 minutes.
During the scan a small amount of warm gel is applied and the probe is moved gently over the area.
It is painless and there is no radiation.
