What a male pelvic ultrasound scan looks at

A male pelvic ultrasound assesses the bladder, prostate (transabdominally) and pelvic floor. It is a safe, painless scan that uses sound waves — no radiation — and is interpreted by an experienced clinician who provides a clear written report.

A male pelvic ultrasound assesses the bladder and, transabdominally, the prostate, and measures how well the bladder empties. It is used for lower urinary tract symptoms such as a weak or slow stream, needing to pass urine frequently or at night, and incomplete emptying. We measure bladder volume before and after you pass urine and estimate prostate size.

One flat fee. Every diagnostic ultrasound is the same price — we do not itemise or add a separate report fee. See our price list for the current fee.

How to prepare and what to expect

Please arrive with a comfortably full bladder (drink about 1 litre of water an hour before, don't empty beforehand). You will pass urine part-way through so we can measure how well the bladder empties. Your scan takes around 15–30 minutes. During the scan a small amount of warm gel is applied and the probe is moved gently over the area. It is painless and there is no radiation. You will receive a doctor-led written report, usually the same day or shortly afterwards, with clear advice on any next steps. We are open 7 days a week, 9am–7pm, with same-day and walk-in appointments in Whitechapel, East London.

Male Pelvic Ultrasound — common questions

Can this scan estimate my prostate size?

Yes. A transabdominal ultrasound gives a good estimate of prostate size and volume and shows how well the bladder empties, which is helpful for urinary symptoms. It is not the same as a transrectal prostate scan.

What does a raised post-void residual mean?

It means urine is left in the bladder after you pass water, which can be linked to an enlarged prostate or bladder problems. Your report will explain the finding and any suggested next steps.

How much does a male pelvic ultrasound scan cost?

We charge one flat fee for any diagnostic ultrasound, with no itemising and no separate report fee. See our fees page for the current price.

Do I need a GP referral for a male pelvic ultrasound scan?

No referral is needed for most scans — you can book directly. A small number of specialist scans are done on referral; we will tell you clearly if that applies.

How long does the scan take and when do I get results?

Most scans take 15–30 minutes and you receive a doctor-led written report, usually the same day or shortly afterwards.
