How to prepare and what to expect

Please arrive with a comfortably full bladder (drink about 1 litre of water an hour before, don't empty beforehand). You will pass urine part-way through so we can measure how well the bladder empties. Your scan takes around 15–30 minutes. During the scan a small amount of warm gel is applied and the probe is moved gently over the area. It is painless and there is no radiation. You will receive a doctor-led written report, usually the same day or shortly afterwards, with clear advice on any next steps. We are open 7 days a week, 9am–7pm, with same-day and walk-in appointments in Whitechapel, East London.

Can this scan estimate my prostate size?

Yes. A transabdominal ultrasound gives a good estimate of prostate size and volume and shows how well the bladder empties, which is helpful for urinary symptoms. It is not the same as a transrectal prostate scan.

What does a raised post-void residual mean?

It means urine is left in the bladder after you pass water, which can be linked to an enlarged prostate or bladder problems. Your report will explain the finding and any suggested next steps.
