How to prepare and what to expect

Please do not eat for 6 hours before the scan to reduce bowel gas, which improves views of the renal arteries. Water and medication are fine. The scan can take a little longer than a standard kidney scan. Your scan takes around 15–30 minutes. During the scan a small amount of warm gel is applied and the probe is moved gently over the area. It is painless and there is no radiation. You will receive a doctor-led written report, usually the same day or shortly afterwards, with clear advice on any next steps.
